There's a New Pope In Town

In case it was possible for anyone to not know, the Pope is in town. And DC seems to be agog. All week long the metro platforms have been announcing that you can take the train to Nationals stadium (if you have a ticket). On the trains, I've heard several cellphone conversations about the pontiff. And the Post is running stories about people who paid thousands of dollars to fly here, or drove all night... And of course there is stuff like this.

Great Awakenings!

First off, I am glad to see someone else who believes that we are in the middle of another Great Awakening.

For those of you unfamiliar with the term, "Great Awakening" refers to historic periods of dramatic religious revival.

Easter Sunday

Btw, Happy Purim, Happy Holi, and Happy Norooz!

I'm told that the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday is called Holy Saturday. It seems more like "Holely Saturday" to me, as in something is missing. From the despair of Good Friday to the exultations of Easter Sunday, what happens in the in-between time? Caught between death and rebirth, Saturday almost seems like a time to sleep. A time to rest and dream.

Good Friday

In some ways, Good Friday was a day like any other day. Around noon time I made my way over to Silver Spring to have lunch with my friend, Kat. While it's been longer than we would have liked since our last lunch, this was not an unusual thing.

It's Easter Sunday and we're born again!

Forgive me reader for I have sinned. It's been nearly a year since my last confession.

Our senior minister is on sabbatical so we had a guest preacher this Easter morn - Marylin Sewell. She started off by acknowledging the UU discomfort with Easter. Of the sample of UU Easter sermon titles she listed, "You Can't Keep a Good Man Down" was my favorite. And then she went into the passion story - a story with which I am well familiar - and yet for the first time, I finally understood what the resurrection actually meant.
